A day with Mrs Pound

Following on with the theme WWII, the children found out about air raids and shelters. Today they built the anderson shelters they designed yesterday

Here is a link to Primary History from BBC. You listen to the sound of an air raid siren and see some images.

Here is a movie from Brainpop. Remember you will need your username and password.

Using a table as shelter

What new knowledge and skills have you gained working with Mrs Pound.

  1. It certainly looks like you have all been very busy making your Anderson shelters. What did it feel like sat under your table, pretending to be in a shelter?

  8. Hello Year 4,

I think your shelters look brilliant. It must have been very frightening to have to hide in a shelter when bombers flew overhead. You would hear the sounds of sirens, planes, guns shooting at the planes and bombs falling. You would wonder if you would survive and if your home might be safe.

I like your idea of hiding under desks in an emergency. If you couldn't make it to a shelter, the desk would give you some protection.

Your wonderful designs had me thinking, what was it like to be in an air raid? I thought I'd write a short fictional story about a family's experience. Here is a link if you're interested...

    1. Thank you for taking the time to write a short story about what it might have been like during an air raid. I really liked the use of audio to help the reader paint a picture. I will be challenging Year 4 children to write something similar.

    2. Amazing, nice things you made. But why was the table a shelter? Why did you make them? I would like to do that one day.

  9. Wow, that sounds very hard but cool because you had to squeeze under your desk and do all your work there too!
I've done something like that too, in kindergarten I had to squeeze under my desk and do my work there too.
Did it hurt to squeeze under your desk and do work?
Was it difficult to squeeze under your desk and think?

  10. I like your own shelters that you designed. When I was in kindergarden we made a chick farm and, we collected some hay from our school playground. When I was young I was creative I used to make that kind of stuff. Did you ever make stuff like shelters when you were young?
