Looking at maps

As part of our "Village in India" topic we have been looking at the information contained in maps.

A map of Chembakolli

First, we played a memory game. Each team came to the front to have a good look at the map and then had to return to the table.  They had to write down information they had gathered.

Using the key to work out what the symbols mean

Writing down what he remembered

Having another look

A different map of Chembakolli

Comparing this one with the large map on the board.

Everyone added colour to the tea, coffee and rice crop. What other features can be seen on the map?

Looking carefully to make sure the colours match

Making a list of natural and man-made features
Finding Chembakolli on a google map
Next time we are going to find out if children go to school and if they do, what they learn.

Write back and tell me what you have learned so far.

  17. Hello Year 4,

Your mapping activity looks very interesting. Having been a Boy Scout and having earned my Queen’s Scout Award, mapping was an important skill for me. With a compass and military map in hand, I would lead my group out on hikes and never managed to lose my way. It started by doing activities like yours in class. The skills are still part of my life as I enjoy bush walking.

I can see you’ve learnt the importance of the key on a map. How different it would be today if I had an iPad in hand, a GPS tracker to know my location, and a Google map to help me? Of course, a map and compass won’t run out of battery power so I think I’d still take them on a long hike. ☺
