Multifaceted learning with a science focus

Multifaceted learning this week had a science focus. The different facets included how to keep ice cold, finding out what the temperature was in different areas of the school and using the sense of touch to identify whether something was very cold, cold, warm or very warm.

Here are photos of the learning taking place.

Combining maths, science and ICT

Year 4 started gathering data to add to a database we made using Purple Mash.

If you still haven't added your information maybe you could complete it over half term.

Challenge areas

Here are some of the challenge areas we enjoy using in class.

Write back and tell me which challenge areas you have used and how it has supported your learning.

How can they be improved? What else would you like to see?

Animal skeletons

Here is the game we started to play this afternoon.

I have a challenge for you. Can you find the definition of exoskeleton, contract and relax?

Moving and growing theme

On Monday we started our new science theme. Over the next few weeks Year 4 will be learning about our bodies, especially the skeleton and muscles.

Here are a few games I have found, including the one we looked at yesterday.

How many questions will you get right in this quiz

The game we played together is here

BrainPop has lots of videos too. Log in and search "skeleton"

Here is the funny dance you enjoyed performing

Have a look at Ayisha's version, can you work out what she has done?

Welcome back

It was lovely to see everyone again this morning. I hope you have a great holiday and ready to learn this term.

We got straight back into our science work and here are the photos of you finding ways to separated solids and liquids.

There are lots of games here to play

Science afternoon

I had a brilliant afternoon today working with my amazing scientists. I hope the children will respond using the comment box to let everyone know what they found.

Here are some photos of the learning that took place in class.

Having some science fun

On Wednesday morning we had a problem to solve.

Containers with sand, pasta, peas, corn and paper clips

Working in pairs to plan what to do

Recording the science experiment

What is she using the magnet for?

A sieve to separate the sand and pasta

Step 1: Using the magnet
Why are the paper clips attracted to the magnet?
Step 2: Pouring the sand and corn into the fine sieve

Tapping the sieve

The  mixture is now separated

Team work

Separating sand, pasta and corn

Sand falls through the sieve, leaving pasta and corn behind

Pasta and corn

The boys thought they could use the funnel sieve but will
it work? Why?

Thinking caps on. Making own sieve

Will the corn fit through? Make the hole bigger?

Making the holes, not too small and not too big

Corn will fall though but will the pasta?
Using sieves with different size holes

Sieve containing the pasta and the corn

Everyone worked really hard to follow the headings on the plan.

They identified what they had to do, predict what would happen, carry the experiment out and write a conclusion.

The children thought very carefully about what needed to be done and realised they didn't have to panic if what was planned didn't work.
After all, we learn more from what goes wrong than what goes right.

Mr Walls the Mad Scientist

This afternoon Y4 had lots of fun watching some demonstrations and discussing what was happening and why. Mr Walls found his amazing ideas from Science Kids

Does an orange float or sink?

What did you find out?

Can you stab a potato with a straw?

Is there a straw in the potato?

Raw or boiled egg? How can you tell?

Does the egg spin or wobble?
oh no, which one is it? Will it be the raw one?
He is a brave volunteer

It looks like you all had a very interesting afternoon.

Write back and tell me what happened during the experiments. Did everything go as Mr Walls expected?
If not, why do you think that was?
